This is the third article in a five-part series examining the excuses that often prevent business owners from growing their business.
Every business owner wants to grow. They want to increase their market share, sell more products, and ultimately make more money. Ironically, at the same time, most business owners tell themselves that they don’t have the time to invest into growing their business.
That objection begs this question: if you do not have the time to grow your business now, how are you going to find the time later? Yes, growing your business requires that you invest additional time, beyond the day-to-day operations of your company. But investing time is the only way to create the success that you really want.
Investing time to create systems for running your business will allow you to hire employees – freeing you of some of your daily responsibilities.
Investing time into networking and marketing will help you grow your revenue, providing the funds for you to purchase equipment or additional employees.
Investing time into your business plan will allow you to chart a clear course forward, ensuring that you meet your long-term goals as well as your short-term goals.
I have run several businesses over the years, and I know what working 60 or 70 hour weeks can feel like. Finding even one hour each week to dedicate to growing your business can seem impossible. But trust me when I tell you that the time you spend planning for the future will be the most valuable hour of your week.
If you desire the freedom that comes from owning a successful business that doesn’t depend on your presence on a daily basis, there is only one way to achieve it. You must create a plan, and you must create systems. You must hire and train employees to execute these systems. Then, you will be able to sit back and watch your business grow—and you won’t be the one doing all of the work. You will be able to take a day off when you feel like it, without the business grinding to a halt. You will have the freedom and the financial resources to live your life the way you want to live it.
Unless you can find the time to invest into growing your business, nothing will change. Stop telling yourself you don’t have the time. Find an hour this week to dedicate to growing your business, then make it a habit.
