Henry Ford once said that “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success.” Today we are going to discuss “getting ready” by developing a healthy self esteem.

In the first article of this series, we discussed the importance of self image. Today, we’re focusing on your self esteem. What’s the difference? It is subtle but very important. Your self image is how you view yourself. Your self esteem, on the other hand, refers to how you feel about yourself… or what you think you deserve.

In business, a low self esteem can have disastrous results. Thoughts like “nobody would ever pay for my insights” or “My time isn’t worth anything” can cripple a business owner and prevent him or her from reaching their potential.

On the other hand, an individual with a high self esteem expects to be well compensated. He or she expects that others will listen and will want to do business with them.

And as you can imagine, these types of thoughts (both positive and negative) form a self-fulfilling prophecy. The business owner who doesn’t value his time doesn’t charge for it—and since he doesn’t respect his own time, neither will anyone else. The same is true of the business owner who considers his own time valuable—so will the rest of the world.

What can you do to boost your self esteem?

  • Look back on your accomplishments. You’ve accomplished a lot in your life—take some time to reflect.

  • Put yourself in position to succeed. You know your strengths and weaknesses, so give yourself the opportunity to work in your areas of strength as much as possible.

  • Stop procrastinating. Procrastination becomes a habit which can be very difficult to break. Unfortunately, procrastinators often develop a low self esteem as a result. Kick the habit! Contact me if you’d like to learn more about this.

  • Face your fears. “I could never get a consulting gig.” “I could never get up in front of an audience and speak.” Make a list of some of your fears—and choose one to conquer! Doing so will give you a massive boost in self esteem!

Your self esteem is a crucial element to business success. If you don’t value your time and your expertise, neither will anyone else. Take some time this week to focus on building your self esteem… you’ll be glad you did!
